Luminous, the black light circus show
From the darkness they emerge, glowing figures that spin, twist and
slide their way around the room. They are Luminous, a Sydney circus
troupe incorporating live body painting, acrobatics and the visceral
visual effects of UV light.
Created by 24-year-old champion body painter Jessica Watson
Miller and appearing at Gasworks as part of the fringe festival, each
performance requires hours of preparation. Watson Miller spends two to
three hours before each show painting her acrobats but usually has to do
so under normal lighting conditions.
"With UV body paint it is definitely easier and better to
paint under the black light, but we very rarely get the luxury of doing
that. So a lot of time when we're prepping the show we're painting blind
and I guess relying on my knowledge of how the paint will work and
trusting in the brushstrokes that is how it will turn out, " she said.
