Part-time is the new full-time
Some people are prioritising other aspects of their life over their work.
Everywhere I look, people are turning their backs on full-time jobs. No longer is a nine-to-five existence the be-all and end-all. Today, for many people, working in the one job day in, day out seems to be a last resort option, instead of a first preference when it comes to working.
In the last week alone, I have met one guy who contracts in the IT industry and works six months a year – less if he can get away with it. Yet, he manages to pay a decent-sized mortgage and put food on the table.
Another bloke I know who is a graphic designer was recently made redundant and has no plans to go back to full-time work. He'd rather take contract positions in a variety of companies, to give him freedom and also a parade of interesting jobs.
Many of the people I know who run small or micro businesses choose not to work full-time. This might be because they are running the family home as well, or simply because they can earn as much as they need without filling all their time with work.
