magazine's Person of the Year — beating out splashier newsmakers like
Caitlyn Jenner, Donald Trump and the leader of ISIS.
As Time explained, Merkel proved herself a firm leader on many of the
world's defining issues this year: Refugee migration, economic crises
and keeping calm in the midst of terror threats.
