There are some artistes you discover.

And then there are artistes who seem to have been there all along.

For me, The Mighty Sparrow was one of those voices.

I first became aware of Sparrow growing up around San Juan, still in primary school, when his presence seemed to be everywhere ... on radio, in Carnival music, in conversations and, somehow, even in the television commercials that formed part of childhood.

One of my earliest visual memories came through a Guardian Life commercial, with that memorable feeling that life was everything. Then Sparrow appeared in my imagination almost like the star of an old action movie ... a real star boy, fighting his way from “Ten to One Is Murder” through the characters, situations and stories that made his music impossible to ignore.

And if you didn't know Sparrow well, you soon would.

Because Sparrow wasn't simply singing songs.
