Cognac
Better known as a high-end sipping spirit, cognac is finding new fans as a cocktail staple. Photo: iStock
Cognac's
contribution to cocktails can surprisingly be traced all the way back to the
1840s. Surprising, because it's only since the late 1990s and early 2000s – the
spirit's so-called second golden age – that bartenders around the world have
reinstated it on cocktail lists.
When you think of cognac,
classics such as the New Orleans-born Sazerac, Kentucky's Mint Julep
[originally made with cognac] and the world famous Sidecar invented in Paris in
the 1920s might spring to mind.
While these drinks continue to
find a place on cocktail lists, cognac is vying for a piece of prized bar life real
estate across the globe, and it's all about teaching the consumer of its
versatility.
